Field note
What a Hari Raya pause does to a renewal cohort
A grocery pass in Penang sent us a cohort that “collapsed” in late March. The welcome team was already rewriting onboarding. The billing file, once we laid a Malaysian calendar beside it, showed four days without reminders during Hari Raya shopping, then a burst of failed charges when people were still travelling.
Leavers we reached did not mention the welcome sequence. They mentioned a fridge that was already full, a family house in another state, and a card that had been used for petrol. The pass was not rejected as an idea; it was ignored for a week the operator had not marked.
Churn analytics in Malaysia has to carry the public holiday list in the same folder as the extract. Otherwise every festive pause becomes a story about the product.
